About Global Discovery Programme

The Global Discovery Programme (GDP) offers a practical approach that allows participants to actively engage throughout the programme while benefitting academically and culturally through their immersion in the rich cultural heritage of Brunei Darussalam. GDP aims to provide students a balance between lectures and field trips to give them an understanding of the Bruneian identiry and culture while gaining mermorable experiences throughout their time in the Sultanate.

Students may choose either Global Leadership Summer School (GLSS) The Discover Brunei Course (DBC) which worths 4 UBD credits.

Global Leadership Summer School (GLSS)

This interdisciplinary, socially-enriching programme offers international students an opportunity to spend part of the summer break living in and learning about Brunei. This course is also designed to include personal leadership skills such as teamwork, creative problem-solving, negotiation and communication techniques. Other component of this program includes community involvement activities and team-building events that will allow you to explore Brunei Darussalam's "Kingdom of unexpected treasures'.

The GLSS encompasses the following lectures/activities:

  • Global Camp
  • Community outreach
  • Teambuilding
  • Leadership

The Discover Brunei Course (DBC)

Being a small country which is rich in traditions, Brunei is unique as it implements an Islamic law while progressively adopting a dynamic sociocultural and socio-economic development. International students will have a chance to learn and experience the true unique Bruneian identity, its economy as well as its surrounding through classes and various relevant visits. The DBC is designed to give an understanding of Brunei through its four themes:

  • Language and Culture
  • Brunei History
  • Business and Industry
  • Green Science

* Notes:

  • You are expected to arrive one day before the start of the program for student dormitory check-in. Please refer to the host institution’s acceptance package for the arrival information.
  • You should only depart after completion of the program.


Fees

Under the student exchange agreement, tuition and application fees are waived. HKUST students will bear the costs for accommodation, meals, travel, visa, insurance, personal expenses and other administrative fees.

Eligibility

You are eligible to apply for summer exchange if you:

  • will have completed Year 1 by the start of program; and
  • have a cumulative CGA of 2.0 or above (Students with CGA below 2.0 may also apply. Offers may be given with special consideration).

Application Process

HKUST students must apply through the Global Student Programs Office. Individual direct application to the program will not be accepted.

To apply, click the “Apply Now” button on this page. The whole application process has two steps.

Step 1: Complete HKUST application form and submit supplementary documents (CLICK HERE for details)
 
Step 2: The Host Institution Application (TO BE COMPLETED AFTER YOU ARE NOMINATED BY HKUST)

If you are nominated, you will be notified to submit a formal host institution application. Detailed information and application instructions will be provided in due course.


Financial Assistance

The HKUST Study Abroad Financial Assistance aims to help HKUST students with financing their study abroad programs. More details can be found at HKUST Study Abroad website.


Credit Transfer

You are advised to discuss your study plan with your major department or any pre-major advisors in your School. For details of the credit transfer procedures, please CLICK HERE.


Visa Information

Students may enter Brunei Darussalam with a tourist visa, and UBD will assist students to obtain the appropriate visa upon arrival. You may contact the Consulate General of Brunei Darussalam in Hong Kong or the consulate or embassy in your country for more information.


Health Insurance

HKUST students who take part in the University's exchange programs will be covered by the University's Travel Insurance Plan. Please CLICK HERE for details.


Accommodation

GDP participants will be staying at The Core Residential College which is a shared apartment comprising 5 rooms. Laundry and cooking facilities are provided in each apartment.
